Rural Properties Needed
While feral cats are best left in the areas where they have formed colonies, sometimes they have to be moved to a safer location. CatSpan needs to find rural properties, preferably well away from the main roads where a colony of cats can be relocated. CatSpan sets everything up and when the cats settle in they will return the favour with some light “mousekeeping”.
Farms, barns and stables make great homes for feral cat colonies. Please contact Laura Liptrot at [email protected] or (250) 390-4688 if you are interested in our Barn Cats program.

The barn cat relocation program
- Supporting a barn cat is the safest way to control barns rodent population. They will keep rodents away from grain and food storage areas.
- Barn cats are relocated in numbers of two or more from the same colony. A familiar face can be an important factor in making the transition successful.
- All barn cats will be vet checked prior to relocation and CatSpan will spay/neuter and vaccinate all cats participating in the Barn Cats program.
- Initially, the barn cats must be confined in their new barn home for three to four weeks to familiarize them with the new environment and remain on the premises after release. During the transition period they will live in a comfy transition kennel inside their new home barn and receive daily food and water from their new care-givers.
- CatSpan provides the care-giver with transition kennel and all the food, water and litter required during the confinement period.
- Upon release the cats will want to explore their new home and find good hiding places. Cats are territorial creatures and because their scent has infiltrated the barn they will think of it as home and stay.
- Cats aren't better hunters if they are hungry. The best guarantee to keep cats happy hunters is to provide a steady source of food and water. Otherwise, they may move away and look for nourishment elsewhere.
- Feral cats are just as healthy as pet cats. They live healthy, natural lives content in their outdoor home. Daily tending to the cats needs allows monitoring to ensure they are healthy.
